The World Championship in draughts, classical game, (Portuguese version of draughts-64) has finished recently in Torre da Oliva — São João da Madeira, Portugal.
The tournament was held in 7 rounds of Swiss system.
The final round of the tournament, as often happens, unfolded very dramatically. Having won the position against Figueiredo António, Vadim did not take advantage of the opportunity and ended the match in a draw, so in the end, 3 athletes scored an equal number of points (+4 each): Portuguese international grandmaster Carlos Anjos, José, international grandmaster from Morocco Quindar, Said and Vadim Lapin.
According to the tournament regulations, in the event of an equal number of points among two or more participants, the fate of the World Champion title was to be decided in additional matches. And with three participants, the player with the highest coefficient received a place in the final, while the other two had to compete for a place in the final match in a semi-final match.
So, having a rather unfavorable starting position in the additional match, Vadim had to defeat both of his competitors on the way to the World Champion title. And he successfully coped with this difficult task, winning in a row in a head-to-head confrontation of both international grandmasters — first Said Quindar, and then in the decisive match — José Carlos Anjos.
Congratulations to Vadim Lapin on winning the World Champion title!
Such success was the result of many years of effort — intense training and painstaking preparation. Before that, Vadym took 4th, 3rd, and 2nd place in the final tables of similar competitions, and now — in 2026 he is the holder of the most prestigious world title!
We wish the World Champion Vadym Lapin and his coach Andriy Shcherbatyuk further encouragement and sporting success!
